Vietnamese students do not have opportunities to do research and learn many skills at schools. Students are confined in the classroom to learn from textbooks and take frequent exams during the year. So participating in GNHD gives me tremendous experiences and it opens a whole new world for me and I have learnt a lot and gain a lot of skills through this experience. This is the first time I know how to conduct a research, interviewing people, work as a team, write a report and prepare an exhibit. Normally, we do not have any opportunities to conduct any research during our study at school and so we were both busy with our homework and our final exams in late May at our schools, we did not have much time for our research until June. We have gone through great experience with full up and down moments which we will never forget. When we were preparing for the competition, we felt a bit stressed when we conduct literature review as there was little information available on the internet and at library. Collecting information, translating it into English and writing annotations is sometime daunting. However, going on field trips and interviewing people to collect our own data for our own research is actually exciting. We were inspired by conservationists and NGO staff that we met during our research. We were a bit nervous when we were getting very close to the competition but still have so much works to do. We were a bit nervous in the judging day and anxious while waiting for the result. Finally, our efforts have been paid off. We received our first ever gold medal and that moment was unable to describe. I’ve learned a lot through this competition and like the organizers kept reminding us: “Everybody is the winner”. We were very impressed with the work and exhibits from other teams from Hawaii, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Thailand... And we have learned a lot from them our peers from their scientific methods to creative ways of presenting their work through their exhibits and presentations.</div>

I would like to thank GNHD team for allowing me to participate in this special and wonderful opportunity. We have made a lot of new friends from many countries. We have had a great time of learning from each other, sharing our culture, playing together, and enjoy all of great moments in Shanghai. From bottom of my heart, I would like to thank Mr. Behring for your generous support for GNHD and for our participation. I am inspired by your work, philanthropy, and donations around the world for education and conservation. You have made this world become a better place for everyone, especially for young kids like me. I cannot thank you enough. CED could create an infographic with statistics about FLEGT-VPA in Vietnam, or with the results of the FLEGT Needs-Assessment. This is more interesting to look at than a long post of solid text. It also uses Oxfam’s main colour, Green, which is important in keeping brand image. 
 
 They encourage users to share a post to show that they have an opinion (usually an opinion which it would be wrong to not agree with).

Social media is a powerful platform in many aspects of personal and professional life, having both positive and negative impacts. However, increasingly social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are being used to raise incredible amounts of money for charities and NGOs through memorable campaigns. In March 2014 a campaign dominated the newsfeeds of British Facebook users who were raising money and awareness for Cancer Research UK. Users took selfies with no makeup on and posted them on Facebook with the hashtag #nomakeupselfie then nominated their friends to do the same; every time someone posted the image they donated £3. It went viral within days and in the end raised £8 million for Cancer Research and they have tweeted that this money will fund 10 new trials. The campaign included celebrities and extended internationally. It wasn’t initiated by Cancer Research themselves but the results speak for themselves: social media is a brilliant way to fundraise and raise awareness.

How NGOs use social media for fundraising</h4>
 
•    Crowdfunding: Crowdfunding raises money from communities of people of the internet. Generally people pitch an idea, set a goal of the amount needed and a deadline of when they need the money. People can then review the projects and contribute towards funding them if they think it is worth it; it is not an investment as donors do not own any part of the project. On most sites no money is transferred until the donation goal is achieved. There are specific crowdfunding sites for NGOs: <a href="http://goo.gl/jyQuJr" rel="nofollow">www.firstgiving.com </a> and <a href="http://goo.gl/8xgF0v" rel="nofollow">www.causevox.com </a>.To increase awareness of the campaign and reach a wider donor audience it is important to use your existing NGO social media platforms to share the campaign, as your audience may not be familiar with crowdfunding. •    YouTube: YouTube, owned by Google, is the largest video sharing website and can be used to create short films to promote you NGO. It is also useful for fundraising. YouTube is a very powerful means of conveying an NGO mission; it enables sharing of videos that show supporters real stories of how a project has benefitted people and how more donations are needed to carry on essential work, triggering an emotional response. Showing where money has been spent and how it has helped also builds trust with supporters, making them more likely to donate again. Overlaying a campaign design over the video with details of how to donate embeds the link between donations and real stories even further; supporters are responding to a call for action. Google for Nonprofits offers a free and enhanced service for qualifying NGOs which allows them to add premium branding capabilities, have increased uploading capacity and presence on specific NGO pages. However, this service is only available in certain countries and currently in Asia only Taiwan, India and Hong Kong have access to it. Start conversations with other local and national NGOs spreading your mission in a wider context and try to encourage mentions from larger NGOs who endorse your projects as it will be seen by their (usually larger number of followers). Do your research and discover what hashtags people are using related to your mission; there is little reward in starting your own obscure hashtag with little followers (in the beginning). Latch onto an existing, popular hashtag and your tweets will be seen by those already researching the topic. If you do make your own hashtag, be sure to check it out first to make sure that any other content linked to that hashtag will not impact your reputation.

Facebook is currently the most popular social networking site with 1.15 billion monthly users worldwide. It is also the place to pull together fundraising, creating impact and policy advocacy. An NGO Facebook page should represent all aspects of the work of the organization,  incorporating other media such as photos and videos (posted from YouTube). The best way to demonstrate your mission and works through Facebook is to include links to other sites; for example posting a YouTube fundraising video and then including a link to your crowdfunding page.  An NGO Facebook page should be an all incorporating advert for your organization with links to all different aspects of your work. Twitter has a similar function, but with less capacity for detail; use twitter for connecting with people and joining in conversations and Facebook for engaging with your supporters and giving them the tools they need to find out more and continue to support you.

Evaluate your office resources and plan your social media accordingly, make sure it is manageable; if staff are low on the ground look to build one or two accounts and make them really impressive rather than making an account for every site possible and never updating them. You will have more impact with one great Facebook page rather than a few inadequate pages. Remember that social media is important for reputation too.  Social media employees will need access to a computer with internet and an up to date internet browser. 
 
•    Training helps: If there aren’t social media experts in your team, and even if there are, it pays to attend a course. Get new ideas and understand how to interpret analytics to make your page better. 
 
•    Be recognizable: Make sure that supporters can identify your brand. Social media streams are a full of different brands and users often only scan the page for mere seconds; it is vital your brand is portrayed correctly. Your profile picture on Facebook and Twitter should be your logo as that is the photo that appears in people’s news feeds. The cover photo is the largest photo on your page and is your opportunity to convey your mission and real work. For example for the Center for Education and Development could choose @CED_NGO or @CEDVietnam. However you name that appears on your page can be 20 characters and is more identifiable and could be Education & Development. Both names show up on the Twitter feed and would look like: Education & Development @CEDVietnam.  
 
•    Tell your story: Engaging content should be easy for NGOs and creating it should be free. Film real people about how your work has benefitted them on something as simple as your phone. Get volunteers to make films and come up with inspiring content but make sure that whoever updates the accounts keeps the content consistent. This is where tone of voice comes in. Decide how you want to speak to your followers and supports and always follow your chosen tone of voice; remember you are representing your organization and it does not want to sound like lots of different voices on your news feed.

It may seem like this is self-explanatory, however what you should set your name to on Facebook depends upon the purpose of your Facebook profile. The size of your cover photo should be851x315. While in a profile picture, the more you are visible the better, a cover photo should be a picture of something wider. So for example, you might want to choose a group picture or a picture of a landscape.

180x180, or 540x540 is the optimal size for your Facebook profile picture. Given that your Facebook profile picture appears on your friends’ newsfeed whenever you do any activity on Facebook, it is important to choose a strong image. A high quality image is also important -  a low quality image will appear pixilated. A natural image that sums up your personality is ideal – so for example a picture of you at the sports’ ground of your favourite team. Facebook allows you to select a profile picture from your computer, your tagged photos or your pictures. There are so many pages on Facebook which you can like – your school or University might have a Facebook page, and this is a really effective way to find out relevant information! The information that Facebook pages can give you is endless, always check if organisations have Facebook Pages – they can be very useful! 
 
Facebook groups – 
Facebook groups are a great way to connect with people! Have a group assignment? A Facebook Group allows you to work with students, discuss, and post pictures and documents. The popularity of Facebook means that it is very likely that your group have Facebook, making it an excellent way to connect. Outside of studying, Facebook Groups allow you to connect with people of similar interests, so for example there are numerous Facebook Groups that provide details about exercise classes, and you can find out which classes are taking place at what time, for example. 
 
The best times to post 
7am, 1pm, 5pm and 9pm have been proven to be the optimal times for Facebook posts. Research also shows that posts towards the end of the week gain more popularity (it is more important to be topical, though so don’t wait till the end of the week if there is a topical news piece announced on a Monday! What to Tweet 
Twitter has a character limit of 140 characters, and even less if you include a link or picture which means that you need to make sure your message is as effective as it can be in such a short character space! It is important, just as with Facebook, to be engaging – use personal pronouns wherever possible and provide interesting information. The more interesting your tweet is the better – tweet something that would personally appeal to you! 
 
Clearly, you are free to Tweet about anything that you want to, and are also free to use it just to communicate with your friends. It is also important to remember, however, that a Twitter profile that shows you effectively campaigning for a cause and showing interest in current news and events can be very useful to your CV. Employers, just as with Facebook, frequently, search candidate’s Twitter pages in order to see what they say. Everything online is traceable so anything that could be interpreted as offensive can have negative effects, offline. All across the world, people have been arrested for posting racist tweets, for example – be careful with everything that you tweet. There are offline consequences for all of your online actions! 
 
Adding a picture and link also helps your tweet to be more effective: this will encourage people to Retweet your tweet. With all social media, it’s important to be as interesting as you can: making your tweets appropriate to your followers is the key to social media success! 
 
Hashtagging, what the # means, and how best to use it 
 
The feature that Twitter is perhaps most well-known for, is the hashtag feature. The hashtag feature groups tweets about topics together. For example, if you tweet “#worldcup”, your tweet will appear with all of the other tweets with the “#worldcup”, this increases the publicity of your tweet – users who look up a specific topic may come across your tweet which will help to increase its popularity! 
 
Twitter then orders the tweets that are the most popular, worldwide and in specific countries and cities to work out the Twitter “trends” at the current moment. This is a very useful tool to see what the world are talking about – if there’s a big sporting event on, or a big piece of worldwide news this will perhaps not surprisingly be in trends, but the trend feature allows you to find out about popular topics that you might have never heard of! 
 
It is best to hashtag generally short phrases rather than something specific - #hanoi will come up more than #iaminhanoi, for example. 
 
Using the Retweet and Favourite feature effectively 
Using comparisons from Facebook, Retweeting is the equivalent of sharing, while pressing the favourite button is like liking it. In general, Retweet something that you think your follows would find interesting and you want to share, whereas favourite something that you appreciate, but do not necessarily think your followers would like to see. The power of the Retweet function is incredible, something you can very easily go viral and spread worldwide – the retweets on the below tweet from Kim Kardashian shows how effective Retweeting can be at uniting people against a cause! 
 
The retweeting of other people’s tweets helps to share information, and also means that you can stay active on Twitter without having to think of original tweets constantly!

On LinkedIn, you upload your Academic Qualifications, Work Experience and Interests online, and connect to people that you know. The most important things to remember about LinkedIn are to be specific about your roles and responsibilities within each of your experiences and not to lie about anything! You have the ability to make your profile public or private, and potential employers can email you! For example, this post by Oxfam is high quality, striking and has a caption telling a story in detail - this personalises the picture. Once a reader has clicked on a picture, if you haven’t written a caption that gives the user key information then you’re missing an opportunity! Every picture that you upload to Facebook has a purpose in promoting your cause and providing key information, so make sure that every picture in an album has a caption that tells a story relating to the work of CED.

Adding the location and date taken is also important in telling your story of the pictures. You want to give the reader plenty of information in a short, well-phrased post that sells your cause. For example, the below post from Oxfam’s Facebook Page has the location where the pictures were taken, an informative but well-phrased album title that encourages users to click on it. The album description encourages engagement through phrases such as “find out how you can join”. The website link to the campaign that the album refers to is also very important. 
 
It would be good practice to create a Facebook Album for at least one event for each CED program. For example, you can simply adapt the program description on the CED website for these Facebook Album descriptions. If you were creating an Album of photos from the FLEGT-VPA conference on 9th July 2014, it might look as follows.

As you can see here, the album title is informative and short, I have added the date and the location. The Album description is a brief summary of the event and contains the key words for the project “FLEGT-VPA”, “communication”, “timber legality” and “legal timber”. It also uses personal pronouns “help us” which encourages engagement and the album description also a link to the website of a specific project.

I have also made the privacy “Only Me”, which means that I am the only user who can see it. This is good to do while you are editing parts of the album and then you can change the privacy back to public once you have finished the album.

As you can see form this photo from the album, it describes what is happening in this picture. I have also tagged the relevant users which helps increases the posts popularity. 
 
After every event relevant to a project create an album with pictures in as soon as possible. It is important to do this while it is still relevant. 
 
It is also better to post all CED pictures from the CED Facebook Page rather than post them from your personal profile. This increases the professionalism of your Facebook page!

While posting albums of pictures is important, using variety in social media is important! Creating an infographic with information can be very helpful. Below you can see, an Infographic made by Oxfam. This contains information relating to their causes, this encourages people to share the image (this image has 2542 shares!). CED could even share this image as part of your Gender Equality project! If you’re using pictures from other Facebook Pages, make sure that you use the Facebook “share” function, rather than saving the image and then uploading it. 
 
CED could create a simple infographic with statistics about FLEGT-VPA in Vietnam, for example, or with the results of the FLEGT Needs-Assessment. This is 
more interesting to look at than a long post of solid text and encourages shares. It also uses Oxfam’s main colour, Green, which is important in keeping brand image. 
 
Just as with other pictures, it is important to have a caption. When posting just 1 picture, make sure that the caption is extra engaging so for example, with the above infographic something like “Gender equality is an important issue, and also an issue that our Gender Equality project aims to help. Have you ever experienced gender discrimination?”. Asking a question encourages people to reply to a post, which generates a discussion and helps to increase the popularity of your post and page! 
 
Status updates 
 
Posts with 140 characters have been proven to be the most effective. So for example:

This is an effective status because it’s topical, it is updating fans on events, it uses personal pronouns like “we’re” and “our”. Statuses with a link have also been found to be popular! 
 
Events 
 
The Facebook event function is very useful in raising the profile on an event. Below is an example of a CSDS event. Guests can invite friends and this is a very easy way to publicise information about events. Having Facebook events like this for CED events are a great way of spreading awareness, you can also easily contact event guests by either posting on the event or sending them an email.

Comments/replying to posts 
 
It is really important to reply quickly to comments, and also be as friendly and personal as possible. This reply from Oxfam UK is a good example of a good way to phrase a reply – use the name of the user and be as friendly as possible!

Sharing is an easy way to regularly post on Facebook and variety is very important for Facebook! Liking relevant pages and organisations means that CED’s newsfeed will be filled with potential posts that they can share! Sharing articles that News organisations post is also important and a great way to provide your Facebook fans with relevant information (an incentive to like your page)! 
 
General Facebook Etiquette 
 
● Do not like your own posts or comments. 
 
● Only Tag people who are in the photos 
 
● Stay relevant and topical to news and current events! 
 
● Make sure posts aren’t too long 
 
● Make sure posts are engaging – encouraging users to do something, and using personal pronouns and/or questions to engage them 
 
The best times to post! 
 
7am, 1pm, 5pm and 9pm have been proven to be the optimal times for Facebook posts. Research also shows that posts towards the end of the week gain more popularity (it is more important to be topical, though so don’t wait till the end of the week if there is a topical news piece announced on a Monday! It is also sometimes better to post just before these peak times, so there is slightly less competition for posts. 
 
How to schedule a post 
 
Regular updates are very important and you don’t need to physically post at these times, in order to make them appear at these times. Facebook has a great scheduling system. You just type a post as if you were going to post it now, but then instead of pressing post, press the button highlighted in yellow below and then you decide when you want to the post the status. This saves a significant amount of time – you can dedicate time to writing lots of posts on Facebook, it also means that you won’t forget to post about a key event.

CED is already posting lots of YouTube videos! The most important thing for YouTube is to make sure that videos aren’t too long and are good quality. It is also important to use Keyword software (www.ubersuggest.com) to find the key terms and use as many of these as you can in the title! It is also important to share these YouTube videos on Facebook pages and websites to help them to gain publicity.

Twitter: a basic guide 
 
CED doesn’t yet have a Twitter page, but it might do in the future! Twitter is quickly becoming the best source of news and information on the internet – and all in one place. Many of the same techniques from Facebook also apply to Twitter! 
 
 
 
Twitter is a bit like an entire social media website dedicated to just Facebook Statuses – you cannot upload albums or create events. Rather, you can post with a maximum of 140 characters (117 characters if you add a photo to your tweet) and can share other’s posts.

Twitter shows you the current trends, the phrases that the most people are tweeting about (you can tailor this to worldwide, to a specific country or even town) at the current time. It is important to utilise these trends, so keep checking them regularly and if there is anything relating to CED work, then to tweet with that same hashtag. This will mean that there is a greater chance that more people will see the tweet. So for example hashtags like #eufao #flegtvpa would be useful for any tweets about the FLEGT-VPA project.

For example, if CED thought the following tweet was something that their followers would want to see then, by clicking the Retweet symbol this causes it to appear on your newsfeed.Pressing the reply arrow replies to the tweet, and the star button favourites the tweet (like liking it). 
 
Twitter as a search tool 
 
Twitter is also a great research tool, using the search tool you can see people’s currents opinion about a topic. Below you can see the results when I searched FLEGT-VPA. This can help you to gather news articles and information about a topic, but can also show you general consensus about a topic. So for example, when FLEGT negotiations are signed in October 2014, a twitter search (even from a personal account) enables you to see people’s opinions about a topic. You can even reply to these tweets to help to solve any information gaps. So for example if somebody tweeted about not understanding FLEGT-VPA, CED could reply with the FLEGT-VPA website.

Twitter requires regular tweets, and a mixture of Tweets, Retweets, replies & favourites. Variety is key! 
 
As you can see from the two graphs above, the weekend and dinner time are the most popular times for Twitter.

To avoid this and make it appear on everybody’s timeline who follows you can put something before their twitter name. For example, I only follow “Jason Ralph”, but his tweet in a conversation came up on my timeline because he wrote “disagree” before “@Alex_J_Bellamy”

Twitter is not as popular as Facebook in Vietnam currently, but it is very likely that it will become popular in the future! 
 
Using a mobile app version of Twitter is also a really good way to make sure that you can tweet on the go!

Instagram is a smartphone app (you can view photos online on their website) but you can only upload pictures from a mobile device. 
 
You upload photos to Instagram, and you can edit them by adding a “filter”, this makes the picture look a lot nicer! There are so many filters to choose from that really bring out the colours in the image. Just like Facebook you follow other users who are relevant, and when you post a picture you use hashtags. Try to think about general terms that people would be searching for example “Vietnam”, “education”. 
 
You can add a location and directly share to Facebook or Twitter.

● Regular updates are very important – keep your followers updated! 
 
● Stay professional by checking spelling and grammar on every post 
 
● Make sure your posts show emotion – “looking forward to”, “thank you to everyone who came” etc.! 
 
● Make the most of current resources – upload videos, photos and information after each workshop and event! 
 
● There are always new types of social media, and the ones mentioned in this article only offer a snapshot to the wide-range of social media applications. These are some of the most popular that I think are relevant to CED! 
 
● Cross-promote your social media pages, show links to your Facebook on Twitter etc. Also, promote your social media pages offline – put them on your business cards, mention them at presentations and workshops and show links. They are just as important as your website link!
